ABOUT

MISSION AND HISTORY

Women Sing East (WSE) is a well-established women’s choir which meets in east London. For many years the choir was part of Spitalfields Music’s community programme, becoming independent in autumn 2015. The choir is led by musical director Fiona Hymns. Our accompanist is Dan Chappell.

We sing a wide repertoire of musical genres including jazz, pop, folk and classical and our performances featured in the Spitalfields Music festival for many seasons. We have been involved in developing and performing commissioned work and had opportunities to collaborate with an eclectic group of composers, lyricists and musicians. We put on a concert every summer and perform at a number of events during the year.

The choir provides members with the opportunity to enhance their singing and performing skills, learn new techniques, have fun and meet people in a supportive environment. New members are welcome, we don’t hold auditions and no previous experience is necessary.

GOVERNANCE
MUSICAL DIRECTOR

The organisation and finances of Women Sing East are overseen by a voluntary committee of members and by Fiona Hymns, our musical director. We have a constitution and hold an annual general meeting every autumn.

Fiona Hymns (MMus, RNCM), based in SE London, is a trained singer with many years of experience as a choral director and teacher, alongside a busy performance career in the classical and operatic world.  Fiona has always had a passion for learning about the voice and uses her skills to help others develop their singing. She leads the Family Eucharist Choir at St Peter's Church, Eaton Square, as well as running the infant choir for Lambeth Music Service at their Saturday Music Centre. As a vocal animateur, Fiona has led and assisted workshops for organisations including Voicelab at the Southbank Centre, London Sinfonietta, the Royal Northern College of Music, Little Voices Richmond and Surrey, and the Royal Academy of Music. As a singer, Fiona works mostly in opera. Notable roles include Elvira (Don Giovanni, Hampstead Garden Opera), Terinka (Cover, The Jacobin, Buxton Festival), Amore (Cover, Orfeo ed Euridice, Buxton Festival), Adina (L’Elisir d’Amore, Pint-sized Opera) and Lidochka (Moscow, Cheryomushki, RNCM). She has performed in the 2017 Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, the Al-Bustan festival concert of Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream in Beirut and joined the chorus of Grange Park Opera for their 2015 productions of Samson et Dalila and La Bohème.
